CAREER HERE AREA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EVENT

 – By

A lot of people ask what my day-to-day duties all include. It’s a tough question because every single day looks so different than the day before. This week, I worked on a potential new housing development, a grant for infrastructure, a new business loan, business signage, website updates, several meetings with my board, and attended a meeting for one of my favorite events- the Career Here Event!

As many business owners know, it is becoming more difficult to find qualified workers for the many jobs in our area.  What you may not know, is that studies have shown that the vast majority of young people would like to spend their lives and build their careers in or near the area where they grew up.  In fact, 75% of high school students who attended last year’s Career Here! Event stated they would like to work in our area if the opportunity exists.

Year THREE of this event will once again be centered around providing high school students the chance to come and talk with area businesses about their career opportunities and what type of education and skills it takes to work in a particular field.

Career here is sponsored by: BASEC, Grow Spink, On Hand Development in Miller, Faulkton Area Economic Development, NESD AHEC, in partnership with the South Dakota’s post-secondary education institutions. The event is set for October 19th from 9am-3pm at the Redfield Armory.

We want students to gain a better understanding of what our area job and career opportunities are as well as be able to see what the work “looks” like on a day to day basis – what type of equipment may be involved and what a daily routine might look like.

We are asking area businesses to join us at the event and bring with them anything that they believe might give students a better idea about jobs in our area.  The event is free for all businesses with sponsorships available.

I would love to see Hand County represented at the event with a number of different booths and opportunities for Hand County businesses. ANY business can sign up. Unfortunately, I have a conflict that day and won’t be able to attend the event. I am however helping with the planning and advertising partition so I am still very much involved. Would you like to talk to area students about working and living right here in Hand County? Call me at 853-3098 and join 350 students from the area for the fun-filled event.
