Grab your guns! Dig out the camo! Get the tags off your newest, brightest orange apparel and get ready for the best hunting season ever! Residents of Miller and the surrounding area always smile when hunting season is just around the corner. And why shouldn’t we?  Hunting brings visitors to our area – some who are relatives, some who are old family friends and some who are here for the first time. It is Hand County’s finest tourist attraction!  And like a good pheasant hunt, On Hand Economic Development is also preparing and planning for OUR next big hunt – the hunt for new businesses – the hunt for new families – the hunt for a strong, economically stable area that is ideal for raising young families and yet quiet, safe and inviting to retirees.

Preparedness is important for any hunt.  And business hunting is no exception. We hope the business climate in our area fosters and encourages new entrepreneurs to take a chance on our town and community. What sort of support does economic development and civic and commerce show to new businesses?  On Hand Development provides supportive monies for new business from gap financing to helping with signs and awnings at each place of business.  Miller C & C gives a “First Dollar” award to new businesses that come to town as well as planning a number of annual events to draw shoppers into town. Businesses can rely on the “millersd.org” website to help advertise their business (especially if they are a Miller C & C member), help with job advertising, and also to find necessary information and resources.

A great hunt considers habitat. Believe it or not – habitat is important to economic development too!  When prospective employees interview in Miller, housing is one of the first topics discussed. On Hand Development is part of the Home Address Plus program through Dakota Resources. Using our Housing Study done in 2013, On Hand is able to identify housing issues that need to be resolved in order to attract young professional families to our area. Safe, affordable housing is a necessary goal!

Finally all the other components come together to make a great hunt for a new business or new family coming to town: accredited schools with strong test scores, great medical services and facilities, a well-stocked public library, healthy downtown businesses, low crime rates, strong infrastructure, and of course friendly people!

Please remember that as your economic development director, I am always on the hunt for business opportunities and new families - -with keen eyesight, the right field, the proper license, the best equipment, unending stamina and of course the fairest approach!
