SD online programsGiven the state’s large area and small population, students in South Dakota may find distance-learning programs to be a practical alternative to packing up and moving to a far-off college town. The number of degree programs and courses available online from South Dakota postsecondary schools is growing, with seven 4-year public colleges and universities in the state currently offering distance learning options. The largest among them is South Dakota State University in Brookings, which offers a variety of associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees online, as well as minors and certificate programs.

Among the six private, not-for-profit online colleges in the state are Augustana College in Sioux Falls, the University of Sioux Falls and Mount Marty College in Yankton. In addition, there are four 2-year public technical institutes and one private 2-year community college in South Dakota with online coursework offerings.

An excellent way to get a better understanding of what a state has to offer in the way of postsecondary education is to take a look at the colleges and universities located in its cities. With approximately 165,000 residents, the largest city in South Dakota is Sioux Falls. The next two sections highlight the current higher education environment in the Sioux Falls area.
