On Hand Development has had the opportunity to work with Youth Leaders from Miller High School this past year. They exude energy, fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a “can do” attitude! Young people are the future and when it’s time to strategically plan for the future of our town and surrounding community, it is in everyone’s best interest to listen to them!

One of their biggest (and most interesting) projects this year has been “Cozy Cabin Christmas”. After several weeks of early morning meetings as well as visits with Miller City Council, the project offering a temporary business opportunity for entrepreneurs is becoming a reality! By the time this article goes to publication, the Premiere Buildings on Broadway will be rented out, decorated and open for business starting Dec. 1st @ 5-8 p.m. (Thursdays & Fridays) and 9-noon (Saturdays) leading up to Christmas. The hope of the project is to encourage entrepreneurship as well as offering first-hand experience to people who have dreamed about owning a business, but who weren’t ready to commit to brick and mortar. Look for advertising in local newspapers and on our MillerSD Facebook page (Like us!) and on our website.

In addition to Cozy Cabin Christmas, Youth Leaders have also been working with On Hand Development, the Miller Fire Department, and the American Red Cross to help distribute FREE smoke alarms to anyone who needs them in our area. Their involvement will help keep many homes and families safe from the real dangers of fire.

Finally, Youth Leaders stepped forward as a vital component to On Hand Development’s recent strategic planning session. On Hand Development purposefully engages intergenerational dialogue when discussing the future of our community. And once again, Youth Leaders didn’t disappoint! They provided insight and refreshing perspectives as well as challenging the adults to think “outside the box”. Youth Leaders are one the best gifts under the Miller Community Christmas Tree!
