BNSF’s busy grain business good news for South Dakota

Friday, August 19, 2016

Seeing lots of grain-hauling business, in the Dakotas and elsewhere, BNSF Railway has brought back nearly half the workers it furloughed months ago, according to Amy McBeth, a St. Paul-based spokeswoman for the Fort Worth-based railway.

After oil and coal prices and production flagged last year, BNSF’s freight business sagged from high levels and about 5,000 employees were furloughed.

But McBeth told the Capital Journal Thursday that about 2,400 of those 5,000 are back to work, largely because of “an uptick in grain traffic this quarter compared to last.”
