Youth Leaders Art Mural Project

Each year, On Hand Development Corporation sponsors a Youth Leadership project with the main goal of positively impacting the community. The 2018 Youth Leaders decided to do an art mural project. Research on creative placemaking and creative community development has demonstrated that there is great economic impact from art projects and programs. Economic impact studies of the arts have proved that arts activity is a valuable asset to cities AND rural communities.

Studies are showing communities aren’t transformed by a singular event, individual, or project, but by the participation and engagement of many people in actively shaping the community over time and that is exactly what the Miller Youth and On Hand Development are doing. They are all engaging and participating in the community that they love.

So far, the Youth met with the City Council, Miller School Board and On Hand Development Board to share their project idea. Students have local artists that will be assisting and community members as they work with Amber Hansen, Art Professor from USD. Community paint days will be mid-July 2019. The location of the mural will be on the south side of Polly Shoe Store.

What if we focused more on creating and sustaining the conditions that allow for long-term, sustainable creative leadership rooted in the culture and identities of the community at large? Would the Miller youth be more inclined to move back to Miller after graduation and make Miller home for good? Would they feel like they left their mark on Main Street Miller and be proud to call Miller home?
